Stress-Optical Effects with Generalized Plane Strain in a Photonic Waveguide

Planar photonic waveguides in silica (SiO2) have great potential for use in wavelength routing applications. The major problem with this type of waveguide is birefringence. Anisotropic refractive indices result in fundamental mode splitting and pulse broadening. The goal is to minimize birefringence effects by adapting materials and manufacturing processes. One source of birefringence is the use ...

Simulating a Generator Made From Nonlinear Materials

This model is a static 3D simulation of a generator having a rotor with permanent magnets. The center of the rotor consists of annealed medium carbon steel, which is a nonlinear ferromagnetic material that is saturated at high magnetic flux densities. The core is surrounded by several blocks of a permanent magnet made of samarium and cobalt, creating a strong magnetic field. The stator is made ...

Bracket Tutorial Models

These models are used for an introduction to structural mechanics modeling using the structural mechanics module. The following features are introduced: - The Fundamentals: A Static Linear Analysis - Parametric study - Including Initial Strain - Modeling Thermal Expansion - Adding Rigid Connector - Adding Spring Conditions - Modeling with the Shell Physics Interface - Transient Analysis - ...

Syngas Combustion in a Round-Jet Burner

The model simulates non-premixed turbulent combustion of syngas (synthesis gas) in a simple round-jet burner. Syngas is a gas mixture, primarily composed of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. The name syngas relates to its use in creating synthetic natural gas. In the model, syngas is fed from a pipe into an open region with a slow co-flow of air. Upon exiting the pipe, the syngas ...

Topology optimization

A demonstration of topology optimization using the Structural Mechanics Module and the Optimization Module. Three classical models are shown, the loaded knee, the Michell truss structure, and MBB beam. The optimization method is based on using the SIMPS approach to recast the original combinatorial optimization problem into a continuous optimization problem.

RF Heating

This is a model of an RF waveguide bend with a dielectric block inside. There are electromagnetic losses in the block as well as on the waveguide walls which cause the assembly to heat up over time. The material properties of the block are functions of temperature. The transient thermal behavior, as well as the steady-state solution, are computed.

Inductor in an Amplifier Circuit

This model shows how to combine an electric circuit simulation with a finite element simulation. The finite element model is an inductor with a nonlinear magnetic core and 1000 turns, where the number of turns is modeled using a distributed current technique. The circuit is imported into COMSOL Multiphysics as a SPICE netlist, which merges the inductor model and the circuit elements as ODEs.

Droplet Breakup in a T-junction

Emulsions consist of small liquid droplets immersed in an immiscible liquid and widely occur in the production of food, cosmetics, fine chemicals, and pharmaceutical products. The quality of the product is typically dependent on the size of the droplets. Simulating these processes can help in optimizing these droplets as well as other process variables. This model studies the volume mass ...

Sheet Metal Forming

This example is a NAFEMS validation model of a friction contact problem with an elastoplastic material model. A thin metal sheet is being forced into a die by a punch. Both the compressing displacement and the release of the punch are modeled in order to compute the forming angle (at the maximum punch displacement) and the angle after the punch release. Experimental data are available for ...

Transient Modeling of a Capacitor in a Circuit

A transient model of a capacitor is solved in combination with an external electrical circuit. The finite element model of the capacitor is combined with a circuit model of a voltage source and a resistor. A step change in voltage is applied, and the transient current through the capacitor is computed and compared to the analytic result.
