Cascaded Rectangular Cavity Filter

A cascaded cavity filter provides much better bandpass filter performance compared to a single cavity. Out-of-band rejection improves dramatically using a cascaded design. This model uses three rectangular cavity filters coupled via slots. The calculated S-parameters show excellent out-of-band rejection.

AC Electrokinetically Enhanced Surface Reactions

This model studies the use of AC electrokinetic forces to enhance the rate of transport of electrolytic reactants to a reaction surface on the wall of a microchannel. If transport was to be governed by flow alone, then the flow velocity perpendicular to the surface would be so small that the analyte would be transported mainly by diffusion. The reaction rate at the surface is large enough ...

Capacitance in a Microstrip

To illustrate how to calculate lumped parameters of capacitance, this model calculates such in a microstrip. The example shows the two different ways of calculating this: with a static analysis and with a time-harmonic analysis.

Reaction Chain

This model describes the simultaneous transport of three solutes in a chain reaction within a variably saturated flow field. Involved are advection, dispersion, sorption, biodegradation, decay, and volatilization. The parent solute decays to a daughter product, which generates another tracked daughter. Built on the flow field described in Sorbing Solute, the transport scenario described here ...

Optimization of a Tuning Fork, Modeled with LiveLink for SolidWorks

This model computes the fundamental eigenfrequency and eigenmode for a tuning fork that is synchronized from SolidWorks via the LiveLink interface. The length of the fork is then optimized so that the tuning fork sounds the note A, 440 Hz.

Reactive Muffler

This is a benchmarking model to compare the abilities of COMSOL to an analytical solution. The model examines the sound-transmission properties of an idealized reactive muffler with infinitely long inlet and outlet pipes and one expansion chamber. The infinitely long inlet and outlets are simulated through a reflection-free source at the inlet pipe and a reflection-free end of the outlet pipe, ...

Isospectral Drums

Striking a drum excites a spectrum of vibration modes that together make up the instrument’s characteristic sound or acoustic signal. These vibration modes correspond to the eigenmodes, or eigenfunctions, of the drum’s membrane. Thus you can study this problem by solving eigenvalue problems for stretched membranes. Two different geometric shapes are modeled, with all other parameters ...

Diverging Duct

When the diameter of a pipe suddenly increases, the area available for flow increases. Fluid with relatively high velocity will decelerate into a relatively slow moving fluid. Depending on the Reynolds number, this can cause turbulence and much of the excess in kinetic energy is converted into heat and therefore wasted. If the change of the cross-section is gradual, the kinetic energy can be ...

Molecular Flow Through an S-bend

This model computes the transmission probability through an s-bend geometry using both the angular coefficient method available in the Free Molecular Flow interface and a Monte Carlo method using the Mathematical Particle Tracing interface. The computed transmission probability by the two methods is in excellent agreement with less than a 1% difference. This model requires the Particle Tracing ...

Molecular Flow in an RF Coupler

This model computes the transmission probability through an RF coupler using both the angular coefficient method available in the Free Molecular Flow interface and a Monte Carlo method using the Mathematical Particle Tracing interface. The computed transmission probability determined by the two methods is in excellent agreement with less than a 1% difference. This model requires the Particle ...
